How we calculate the number of days:
Pickup/Return:
We calculate our hires on a Calendar Day Basis. You can pickup your vehicle anytime after 8 a.m. however you are required to return the vehicle by 5 p.m. on the final day of hire. Vehicles returned after 5 pm are required to accept the Late Return Option (see below).
Late Return (optional): Cost is half of daily rate
Flights from Christchurch Airport often depart early in the morning. To assist customers who like to spend the last night in their campervan, we offer a late return option. Drop off the vehicle anytime until 7 am in the morning and only pay for half a day. You can book a shuttle bus to pick you up outside our office 24 hours a day. This option is also available for Auckland hirers.
Type of Hire:
One Island or All of New Zealand
Travel within one island (North or South Island only) and we offer a cheaper rate. Select All of New Zealand if you would like to travel both islands.
Split Hire (multiple hire)
Hire one vehicle in the North Island and another vehicle in the South Island (or vice versa). Make your own way between the North and South Island at your own pace, or fly. You only need pay for the days you’re using the vehicle (we calculated the price as one hire). This means if you hire extras like outdoor table and chairs, a linen pack or choose the zero excess for insurance, you only pay once. You also save on the ferry crossing, receive any long term hire discounts and there is no one way fee. Minimum hire period for each island is seven days.
Bond
When you pickup the vehicle, we take an imprint of your credit card, however there is no money taken from the credit card at that time. Your credit card imprint can be used for expenses such as extension of the rental, traffic infringements, damage to the vehicle (if you did not have a zero excess, and only if it was your fault), or if the vehicle was returned unclean.
Traffic Infringements:
We charge a $40 administration fee for traffic infringements, such as parking tickets, speed camera tickets, etc. Please note that all parking tickets are left on the windscreen by the Parking Warden. The ticket will display a due date of when it must be paid. If you pay the ticket directly, or if you ask us to pay the ticket on your behalf before the due date, you will not have to pay the administration fee.
If the ticket is not paid by the due date, the local authorities will send another copy of the ticket to us by mail. Speed camera tickets generally take more than two weeks before they are received by mail. The administration fee covers the cost of us writing to the local authority which issued the traffic infringement and transferring the ticket to your name. The local authority will then send another copy of the ticket directly to you by mail.
Road Restrictions
You can drive the vehicle on all public sealed and unsealed roads in New Zealand except for three roads – Ninety Mile Beach, Ball Hutt Road and Skippers Canyon.
a. Ninety mile beach (Far North)
Ninety mile beach is a registered road, accessible via Te Paki Stream. Six wheel drive buses provide daily tours along the beach and some even drive on the sand dunes. You are allowed to drive along the main highway to Cape Reinga and the light house, which is one of the northern most points of New Zealand. Bus trips along Ninety Mile Beach are available from Kaitia and the Bay of Islands.
b. Ball Hutt Road Road (Mt Cook)
This road goes travels up the side of New Zealand’s highest mount, Mount Cook. You can drive as far as the visitors centre.
c. Skippers Canyon Road (Queenstown)
This very steep, single lane road was hand carved (with the help of dynamite) in 1902; it took 20 years to complete. It was used during the gold rush days and is now home to AJ Hackett’s Pipeline Bungy Jump, Shotover Jet Boat Tours and Winky’s Gold Mining Museum. Daily tour buses can take you down into the Canyon.
Drivers 18 – 20 years old
You must have held a full license for a minimum of one year. The insurance excess will be calculated at the rate of the youngest registered driver. Insurance options are as follows:
Option One (included): Insurance excess of $2,000
Option Two: Insurance excess of $1,000, Pay additional $15 per day or $280 p/hire.
Option Three: Zero insurance excess, Pay additional $30 per day or $560 per hire.
