Freedom Camping
This is a popular for budget travelers and those who enjoy the freedom of independence. It allows you to stay in New Zealand’s isolated, scenic areas and wake up to a fantastic view in the morning. There are also many Rest Areas along main roads where you can park for the night. However, please take extra care and be eco-friendly. A few places, such as Lake Taupo District, have restricted freedom camping due to damage caused to the environment.

When you pickup your vehicle, we provide free road maps, guides and directories for the following Holiday Parks and DOC sites. We also have a limited number of free B&B guides available.
Holiday Parks (previously called Camping Grounds):
Prices range between $12.00 to $16.00 for a powered site, per adult/per night. This includes use of the holiday park facilities, such as kitchen, showers and toilets. Most holiday parks are independently owned and belong to an association. The main associations are:

Bed and Breakfast (B&B)
B&B’s can be a luxury homestay, farmstay, cottage, hotel or boutique inn, ranging in price from $50 to over $150 per night. View more information about B&B’s online at:

Department Of Conversation (DOC) Campsites:
DOC manages over 250 vehicle-accessible camping areas on conservation land. Prices range from free to $14 per night, depending on facilities.
